Google stops scanning Gmail

Post by arzina998 »

Column – The interesting thing about the message was of course not that they were stopping. No, it was the obviousness with which they had once started, but we may have forgotten that already. Maybe we thought it was normal, from the start. Yes, of course, the sun doesn't rise for nothing.

Google announced last week that Gmail users no longer have to worry that if they mention in an email that they’re considering moving and buying a new home, a mortgage lender will immediately pop up on the right side of the screen. Or that if you mention your cat, an ad for cat food will pop up.

Google is stopping something that everyone wondered if they should have started with, some thirteen years ago. Google reads every email, every word, tries to understand what it is about and based on that, ads are offered. We all agreed. Apparently we were once so happy with a reliable web-based email application that we accepted the ads as part of the deal.

Advertisements
Does this mean that Google will no longer advertise in your emails? Uh, no, that will continue to exist. They don't need your emails for that. Google already knows everything about you. Billions of users use the search function, billions of users regularly watch YouTube. So you don't have to worry about not being known. And based on your known profile and behavior, you will still receive targeted advertisements

Reading emails
Does this mean that Google no longer hong kong email list reads your emails? Uh, no, they happily continue reading. Word for word. For multiple purposes. Mostly to help you, because let's not forget that Google is there to make the world a better place. Don't be evil , after all. Less phishing emails , emails that make you think that your bank wants to know things about you. Less spam too, unsolicited emails from overjoyed Nigerians who want to share their inheritance with you or Russian women who want to get laid .

Google will continue to read your emails, so don't worry. On your phone, you can get the thoughtful notification that your flight that you have to take in a few hours is delayed. Or that the appointment that you just confirmed in an email conflicts with your calendar.

Do you let your colleague read along?
Observation: if your colleague looks over your shoulder at an email you are typing, you look strange. If that colleague then also points out to you that you have made a double appointment in the email, it becomes awkward. Why are you interfering? None of your business! You are right, no doubt about it, but I don't need to hear it from you.

If the same signaling is done by a neutral computer medium, the intimacy is a lot less unwanted, or at least that is how it is experienced.
