From September 1, 2026, all Russian universities will switch to an updated system of higher education, the press service of the Ministry of Education and Science reported. By this time, the department will prepare and approve the relevant regulatory legal acts. At the same time, students who are studying under the current educational programs will be able to complete the mastery of the program to which they were admitted.
What is known about the updated system of higher education in Russia
The press service of the Ministry of Education and Science has not yet reported on the essence of the updated higher education system in Russia, which will start operating on September 1, 2026. Today, six leading Russian universities are participating in the pilot project, which was launched back in May 2023: Moscow Aviation Institute (MAI), MISIS University of Science and Technology, Moscow State Pedagogical University (MPGU), Baltic Federal University (BFU), Saint Petersburg Mining University (SPSU), and Tomsk State University (TSU).
As part of the pilot project, students of these universities receive basic higher education, specialized higher education in master's programs and professional higher education in postgraduate programs.
