Thailand , formerly called Siam , is a country in Southeast Asia . Its capital is Bangkok . It is surrounded by many countries: Burma to the northwest and southwest, Malaysia to the south, Cambodia to the southeast, and Laos to the northeast.

Stretching approximately 1,770 km from north to south and 805 km from east to west, the country is part of the Indochinese Peninsula. It is also part of the Malay Peninsula from the Isthmus of Kra.
