Niche Players
Given that Baidu is a Chinese search engine, Yandex is a Russian search engine, and Ecosia originated in Germany, let’s take a closer look at how they rank in their respective markets.

China
ranking Search Engines Visits from China %
1 Baidu 66.82%
2 Google 21.24%
3 Bing 2.21%
4 Amazon 2.30%
5 duckduckgo 1.75%
Russia
ranking Search Engines Visits from Russia %
1 Google 98.17%
2 Yandex 0.55%
3 Yahoo! 0.49%
4 Amazon 0.32%
5 Bing 0.20%
Germany
ranking Search Engines Visits from chile mobile database Germany %
1 Google 89.54%
2 Yahoo! 3.04%
3 Bing 2.40%
4 Amazon 1.93%
5 duckduckgo 1.43%
6 America Online AOL 0.73%
7 Ecosia 0.70%
Based on this, it’s fair to assume that you really want to optimize your site for Google, regardless of your market – except perhaps China. However, if you want to target the Russian market, you can’t ignore Yandex.

Which search engine is most popular on social media?
But what about the average internet user? So who comes first?

Here are the top search engines based on Twitter following:

ranking Search Engines Twitter followers in September 2021
1 Google 23.4 million
2 Amazon 3.8 million
3 duckduckgo 1.9 million
4 Yahoo! 1.4 million
5 Bing 544,600
6 America Online AOL 164,800
7 Ecosia 87,300
8 Askom 59,200
9 Baidu 44,200
10 Yandex 18,900
As expected, Google and Amazon remain at the top. However, DuckDuckGo has surpassed Yahoo and Bing, jumping two spots in the market share rankings. Ecosia also rose two spots, while Baidu fell to the bottom. This may indicate a demographic difference between general search engine users and those who are active on Twitter.

When it comes to customer ratings, the rankings differ again. We checked the Trustpilot scores for each internet search engine in September 2021:

ranking Search Engines Trustpilot rating stars5
1 Ecosia 3.9
2 Google 3.4
3 duckduckgo 3.3
4 Yandex 2.9
5 Baidu 2.3
6 Bing 2.0
7 Amazon 1.9
8 Askom 1.9
9 America Online Yahoo! 1.7
10 Yahoo! 1.6
Kind of a different picture, isn't it?

While established players like Google still hold the top three spots in terms of customer ratings, Amazon has fallen all the way to No. 7, while Ecosia has leapt to the top, with DuckDuckGo not far behind. Ecosia’s most popular position here is a strong sign of how much potential this search engine has.
