“Implementation at the national level will cement AI as a catalyst for productivity gains in the digital economy,” Plummer said. “Successful implementation of large-scale AI initiatives requires support and collaboration from multiple stakeholders, which means mobilizing and pooling national resources.”

Among the key AI applications for CIOs and other IT leaders is the ability of generative AI to help IT departments manage legacy systems. According to Gartner, by 2027, GenAI tools will be used to understand legacy business applications and create replacements accordingly, reducing modernization costs by 70%.

“ (LLMs) will provide CIOs with a robust and long-awaited mechanism to modernize legacy business applications in a cost-effective manner,” Plummer explained.

He recommends that CIOs create dedicated teams to test the output generated by LLM, and establish change management and training processes to ensure that employees are as productive as possible throughout the upgrade cycle.

Along with the opportunities, Gartner also identified misinformation as a risk that will increase as generative AI matures. “The rapid advancement of GenAI is pushing regulators to include misinformation as a risk associated with the growing capabilities and accessibility of GenAI to malicious actors,” Plummer said.

Companies that closely monitor the actions of bad actors, regulators and providers of tools and technology to help combat disinformation are likely to gain a significant advantage over their competitors, he said.
