Desktop referring URLs

Post by rochon.a1.119 »

while it's becoming less common than it once was, thanks to the rise in popularity of responsive sites, there are still sites with separate mobile and desktop versions.

So how do you deal with them to make sure you don’t fail with mobile-first indexing?

Follow these key considerations:

Make sure you correctly implement rel=canonical and rel=alternate elements between the mobile and desktop versions of your site.

Make sure that the robots.txt file on both versions isn't blocking key parts of your site from being crawled. In particular, make sure that your mobile site isn't blocking crawlers.

Carefully check your rel=hreflang implementation to ensure that refer to mobile ones and vice versa.

Please adjust and verify both versions of your site in Google Search Console to allow access to all your data, warnings, and messages.

Make sure your desktop pages have corresponding mobile singapore mobile database pages. Sometimes pages are left out of a mobile version, so these pages would not appear in Google's index with mobile-first indexing.

That said, Google does not recommend separating URLs in site settings because it is difficult to implement and maintain. A responsive site is the recommended approach in 2020; if it is not possible for whatever reason, just make sure you take the time to check both versions thoroughly to prevent any potential issues from appearing.

Mobile-first indexing sounds intimidating, especially for those who remember the “mobilegeddon” of 2015. But the reality is that if you’re already providing a good mobile experience and want to make sure you have the same content on desktop and mobile devices, you have quite a bit to worry about.

Mobile-first indexing is here to stay, and the more you communicate with designers, developers, and the rest of your team, the easier it will be to adopt best practices and recommendations before they become a problem.
