What is a competitive advantage?

Some examples of competitive advantages that are applicable to certain products or services by a company are, for example, having a patent, brand value, having exclusive distribution channels, having an R&D department, having high-quality production processes. A clear example would be, if I offer a different and innovative product and it manages to be successful in the current market, I can have a competitive advantage over other products in terms of its design.

Companies take a series of actions to gain a defensible position in a given industrial sector and obtain a performance above the average of their industry. Such performance can only be obtained if the company achieves a sustainable competitive advantage over time, which will allow it to differentiate itself from the competition and obtain a superior relative position to compete.
