The youth are the future. That mantra has been true for our adolescents and young adults for years. They are fresh and uninhibited in life and have the energy and opportunities to shape the future to their advantage. But is that still true in 2016?

Early 2016, research agency Beautiful Lives conducted extensive research into Generation Swipe. Generation Swipe are 16 and 17-year-olds who were born into a world where the internet is like 'water from the tap' and who know nothing better than that the smartphone is the remote control of life. What do they do? What drives them? What are their visions of the future? And what is different for them than for previous generations? The conclusion? Everything you thought is wrong! Well, a lot. Below we describe 7 important learnings about Generation Swipe: the 7 slices of Swipe .

Slice 1: No 'yolo'
Let's get straight to the point, the attitude of Swipers is very different from that of Generation Z. Where Z went through life carefree under the motto You Only Live Once, Generation Swipe is seriously busy working on the future. No wild parties, no alcohol and drugs (only songs about it) and no piling up debts. Where previous generations rebelled against society, Generation Swipe adapts to it. They do what society expects of them and prepare themselves for adult life in a very responsible way.

More than ever, the foundation for independence must be laid in the few years that they are teenagers. At a young age, they are taught at school about things like obesity, sexuality and the dangers of the internet. In addition, they are used to boundaries imposed by the government. Swipers believe that it is the government's job to protect society from bad influences and it is therefore completely logical to adhere to this (in a reasonable way).

Perform faster
On top of that, young people in today's society have to perform faster and faster. Under pressure from friends and family in the field of sports or music lessons. But also under pressure from the government, because you are tested at an increasingly younger age at school and you also only have 4 years to study, and then at your own algeria telegram number list expense. In addition, you also have to show serious motivation for more and more further education. That makes it important to work on a good CV at the age of 16. All this makes the opposite of the mantra with which we started this article true: the youth does not have the future, the future has the youth.

The youth do not have the future, the future has the youth.

Slice 2: The world is small
As connected global citizens, Generation Swipe is growing up in a world full of threats. Attacks and terrorism are the order of the day, and since 9/11 the once so ‘safe’ West is no longer untouchable. Add to that the banking crisis, the economic crisis, climate change and the current refugee crisis, and you realize that Swipers have been confronted with misery in the news (in one form or another) their entire lives. It is something they live with constantly, without being burdened by it. The news is what it is: a fact of life.

Nevertheless, Swipe does arm itself against the big bad world. They do this by keeping their own world small. Of course they can have contact with everything and everyone, but when it comes down to it, they like to keep their own world small and manageable. Family is important and a trusted base. More than in previous generations, grandparents are also part of this foundation. In addition, Swipers rely on a small group of friends who they have often known their entire lives. A small and manageable world offers safety in all the 'violence' around us.
