On May 27th, Mynavi Creators held an online seminar called "Web Industry Evolution Practical Course #06: In-house Designers Talk About the Experience Needed to Jumpstart Your Career."
"Web Industry Evolution Practical Course" is a course where you can learn industry email list about your career from role models working at the forefront of the web industry. This is the sixth installment of the series, and this time we invited Shinpei Oishi as a guest to talk about the experience you can gain as an in-house designer and the key points of your career.
Instructor Profile
Mr. Shinpei Oishi
Shinpei Oishi,
Manager and Designer of the Web Design Group at a major manufacturer
After graduating from university, he had his job offer cancelled and gave up on his path to becoming a designer. He tried to move to another industry, but was unable to give up and moved to a design firm in Tokyo, where he began his career as a designer with no prior experience. He worked as a graphic and editorial designer, mainly on print media production.
In 2016, he moved to become an in-house designer for a major manufacturer in the industry. After working in graphic design, he switched to web design. Involved in upstream processes such as not only visual design but also information design, direction and management, he has renovated and built multiple websites for B2B, B2C, EC and overseas. He is currently the manager of the web design group, supporting graphic career designers while raising the level of the web area within the organization.
The difference between contract designers and in-house designers
Oishi gained experience in graphic and editorial design at a production company, and is currently involved in web design and direction at a business company. The seminar began with a self-introduction and a look back at Oishi's journey so far (for details of his career, please refer to the pre-interview " I needed to become a unique talent to make a place for myself within the company ").
There are "contract designers" who work at production companies and take on work from outside, and "in-house designers" who work for business companies and take on work from within. Regarding the difference between the two, Oishi added the axis of "specialist or generalist" and organized it into a positioning map consisting of four segments.
