Whenever you access a page through a browser, the browser sends a request to the website's server. This communication between browser and server is carried out via HTTP (Hyper Text Transfer Protocol). The server then delivers two things, if possible:

the contents of the page or a predefined alternative (404 page or redirect)
the status of the requested page as an HTTP status code
e.g. 200: OK , 301: Redirected , or 404: Not Found

Where does error 404 come from?
As mentioned above, 404 pages occur whenever no content can be found at a given URL. This can happen for several reasons. Here are some examples:

Content from multiple pages is summarized on one page
Products are removed from the range
Content is no longer relevant / correct and has been deleted
No forwarding has been set up
Users enter a non-existent URL into the browser
