How to Reduce Communication Costs in the Tundra by 93%

Alternatives: Cloud PBX
Advantages over mobile satellite communications
This is the story of the company 2M GROUP , whose business is connected, among other things, with the construction of communication facilities for the big four operators in Yamal. The experience can help those whose business is also not devoid of Kaverin's romance. It is possible to ensure stable communication and maintain profitability even in the tundra using IP telephony.

How — says Andrey Gerashchenko, managing partner of 2M GROUP

This time, in August 2018, we had to build a telegram db search communication line from Yamburg to Sabetta. The organization of all processes depended entirely on solving the key task — ensuring communication at the positions. Daily conference calls require a stable connection. A conference is from 15 to 40 minutes of continuous communication.

The area of work is the Yamalo-Nenets region. Internet and communication operators are available only in large shift settlements; there is no connection in the tundra. But there is a small choice of mobile satellite communication operators, and our partners advised us to use Iridium.

The implementation of communications involves fixed costs for the creation of an infrastructure of subscriber equipment for voice communication, which costs colossal amounts of money.

We've done the math. Our managing partner, Alexander Vasilenko, has selected suitable tariffs. The I ridium phone costs RUB 85,000 per unit, and the project requires at least two units with 5,000-minute packages (RUB 131,200). Telephone service needs for August are 1 day 08:21:00 minutes. Total cost of the solution for our needs: RUB 301,331.2.

Alternatives: Cloud PBX
Since we needed the Internet in addition to communication for work, we began to consider another option - organizing a full-fledged PBX in the cloud. Our choice fell on UIS and there were several reasons for this:

Long established in the telephone services market
Honesty and transparency in terms of service provision, no unclear payments pop up, as was the case with the service we worked with before on other projects
Large functionality out of the box (Virtual PBX, call recording, IVR preparation and recording)
Intuitive interface for working with the settings, even a schoolchild can handle it
G729 codec support and prompt technical support
Post-payment, which is very important in the absence of access to payment systems
The organization of the communication infrastructure via satellite Internet and UIS cost 183,210 rubles instead of the Iridium solution for 170,000 rubles. This amount included:

Satellite Internet from AltegroSky (2 sets of equipment 100,000 rubles) unlimited Internet tariff 60,000 rubles ODS service (VoIP traffic marking and provision of a guaranteed bandwidth of 16 kbps) - 2,000 rubles.
2 MikroTik routers — 13,000 RUB.
2 SIP phones - 7,000 RUB.
Cloud PBX UIS — 960 rub.
City number in code 495 — 250 rubles.
2 SIP lines from a box
Advantages over mobile satellite communications
No limit on the number of calls
The quality of communication is an order of magnitude higher and is achieved through the g729 voice codec
Virtual Moscow number, calls to which from Moscow cost 0 rubles, which cannot be said about satellite communication - a call to a satellite phone number costs 460 rubles/min
Monthly communication costs do not exceed 5,797.2 rubles for 1 day 08:21:00 minutes of communication from two IP phones instead of ~ 87,000 rubles (using an Iridium satellite phone with a 5000-minute tariff and our communication needs, we will use up the minutes package in about 3 months of communication via satellite)
