The principle of adaptive design is somewhat different. Here, users are divided into categories depending on the device they use for viewing.
If the appearance of sites made using responsive design is the same on the screens of any gadgets, then adaptive technology, having recognized from which device the web resource was accessed, displays the version that was created specifically for this type of device.
For example, a regular page of a blog that you want to view from a mobile phone will take a very long time to open if it has too many images: photos, text fragments, headings, a “Share” button, etc. In addition, on a small screen the page will seem overloaded.

A site server with an adaptive design does not show reduced copies of the resource, but recognizes the user's gadget type and shows a lightweight version of the blog, which contains only the most necessary interface elements and low-quality images.
Simply put, the server itself does all the labor-intensive work, rather than forcing the site to optimize itself.
This method could be considered very attractive, if not for one “but”: creating an adaptive website is quite a complicated matter. Adapting the design to different resources requires a lot of time for development. And if you suddenly need to adjust something on the page, you will have to make edits to each version. So, if you do not have a large budget and do not have a staff of employees who will be engaged in supporting the adaptive website, it is better to wait with its creation.
Even if your sympathies are on the side of one of the design options considered, you should not proceed from them, but from the preferences of users: what is more convenient for them.
If users are used to dealing with a resource that has the same structure on different devices, and they feel more comfortable this way, then choose responsive design. If you are dealing with more advanced users and are planning to develop the site based on a good foundation, choose adaptive design, this is the optimal solution.
Even though responsive design is more difficult to develop, its advanced features and fast loading speed make it more suitable for increasing conversions, especially in industries such as e-commerce and media.
Regular landing pages or sites that load easily on smartphones and tablets can safely use responsive design, this is optimal for them. The owners of these resources can take the adaptive option into service in the future.
