The Spanish pet industry moves 1.2 billion euros each year , with a total of 13 million registered pets . Although the data is from 2019, that has not prevented Vicent Jornet 's company from ending up at the top of the market after the pandemic.

The Valencia franchise of Maskokotas products and services ended 2019 with 36 million euros , and concluded the unfortunate year of COVID-19 with a year-on-year increase of 24% and a final turnover of 47 million .

The news, however, that has put the chain in the spotlight of investors, entrepreneurs and journalists is, on the one hand, the entry into the capital - with 7 million euros - of the Italian fund Milano Investment Partners , and on the other hand, its repositioning.

In view of the conquest of southern Europe, Maskokotas has been reorganized under the powerful holding company Buddy , together with the rest of its brands related to the sector: Animalear , Petness , Vetality and Miscota .

How has such a specialised Valencian business managed to become the second largest omnichannel group in Spain ? Its history is one of good strategic decisions and inspiring moves for other startups .

Doing business with pets?
At first glance, it might seem like an investment with little return or long payback periods. However, the pet- related market is incredibly versatile and powerful.

It covers the financial market, as well as basic products, healthcare and digital care and well-being solutions. According to data from Packaged Facts , this sector moved no less than 135 billion dollars worldwide in 2020.

Allianz Pet and Animal Wellbeing , the first private equity fund dedicated to pet care created by the famous insurer, estimates that by 2025 the global revenues of this industry will easily exceed 203 billion .

What is happening in Spain? During the lockdown, thousands of people decided to adopt their own pet to minimize feelings of anxiety and loneliness. Thus, four out of ten households have a companion : in 90% of cases, dogs or cats.

We are talking about almost 8 million households in which users spend an average of 1,300 euros a year . It is not surprising that, in light of this situation, the national sector's turnover has risen to 2 billion euros in recent months.

What's more, the number of companies dedicated to the pet industry has grown in the last decade from 7,767 in 2009 to more than 12,500 in 2020. This is the scenario that Jornet has found.

Turner, miller and entrepreneur
Like so many other successful companies today, Maskokotas was born from an exercise in entrepreneurial courage . Jornet, who had worked during his early years as a lathe operator and milling machine operator, decided to leave everything behind to launch himself into the retail world .

It was 1992, and from that small shop in a shopping centre the entrepreneur began to understand how a market still in its infancy worked. After two years of effort, Jornet joined his partner Pascual Lledó to found Yagu ; a textile company for pets.

For any inexperienced entrepreneur, this position would have been sufficiently satisfying to change direction and begin to evolve qualitatively, but not for the Valencian entrepreneur .

With no suppliers, a lot of interest from investors and little prospects for growth, Jornet knew he needed a turning point in his life. And so, he sold his business to his partner Yagu, and set out to travel the world.
