According to the EDPB’s official statement, on 27 October, the Irish Data Protection Commission (DPC) – Meta’s main regulator in the European Union, as the company has its European headquarters in Dublin – adopted an “urgent and binding” decision ordering the Irish DPA, as the lead supervisory authority, to adopt final measures with respect to Meta Ireland Limited (Meta IE) and impose a ban on the processing of personal data for targeted advertising throughout the European Economic Area (EEA).
This followed a request from the Norwegian Data Protection Authority (NO DPA).
In this regard, CEPD President Anu Talus said that “ Meta has not demonstrated that it has complied with the orders imposed at the end of last year. It is time for Meta to adjust its processing and stop the illegal prosecution.”
Meta faces sanctions of €1.59 billion in 2023 alone
In January this year, the DCP imposed a fine of 390 cyprus number data million euros on Meta for presenting several irregularities on its two social media platforms.
The reason? The watchdog accused Mark Zuckerberg's company of illegally asking permission from users who use its social networks to use their data for personalized advertising . Among the arguments, it said that users of Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp must sign a data transfer consent agreement, without which they cannot use the social networks. And that the company cannot force this consent.
Last May , the fine was more serious: €1.2 billion , also for breaching data protection regulations. This sanction was the result of an investigation by the Irish Data Protection Authority, which was also approved by the EDPB. So far, it is the highest fine for data protection ever issued by the EU.
Finally, in September 2022 , Instagram was also sanctioned for mishandling the data of children and adolescents, having to assume a fine of 475 million euros.
