Historically, the state of California received the title of 'Golden State' due to the great gold rushes of the 1840s and 1950s, which ultimately resulted in mass migration westward to the Pacific Coast. Several independent institutions in California also offer MBA programs. In fact, in 1997-98, California's independent institutions awarded more than 3,000 MBA degrees to students, which is roughly equal to the number of both public university systems combined.
